Airport Road
It is a real pandemonium on airport road, especially in the evenings. It is a nightmare, if one has to take a turn towards the koramangala ring road around Diamond District. We have the busses lined up in the left lane, and till the signal for going strainght does not turn green, people cannot even go left. :(.

We have a ditto situation on the Dairy Circle junction from Koramangala towards Tilaknagar.

Would the authorities please find a solution to these bottle-necks?

Vivek Paul, Wipro's Vice-chairman, succinctly summed up Gates as a "supergeek who has dramatically changed the world of computing".

Karnataka releases water. The council of ministers have this to say "the goverment decided against release of water earlier as water level was low, now the water level is improved and hence can release the water". The move is again in the wake of Supreme Court order.

But I guess everyone have to now seriously work out on a long term and permanent solution .As this may repeat next year. Its time the central government intervene and come to a permanent solution with both governments co-operation. And in my view farmers from both the states should also be the part of the committee to work out a solution.

The Cauvery issue has started encroaching the workplace too. Last evening over half of my colleagues were arguing on the same over their evening cups of coffee. The argument went really loud, and could be heard over a distance.

Bangalore Airport
The plight of affairs at Bangalore Airport seems bad. The luggage trollies strewn all over the place causing hurdles to pedestrians as well as drivers... Authorities do not attempt collecting them, and passengers do not consider their duty to keep it aside after use.

I guess the authorities should start collecting a deposit fee of Rs.30-Rs.50 per trolley, and refund it when the passenger returns it back at a certain counter. That way the clutter gets minimised.

Bangalore Issues
The Cauvery issue is here again...and seems to be staying on.

Everytime the Cauvery issue comes up, it brings along problems in Bangalore. A private war breaks out in between the Bangaloreans and the Tamilians. No one is right here...no one is wrong. It is just creating mountains out of molehills.

Just ask the folks creating riots and calling 'bandhs', if this procedure has ever helped them.

btw, the schools and colleges are forced to declare holidays, and the students are grounded at home. A holiday not worth being a holiday!

Cauvery water issue seems to be an eternal problem between two neigbouring states. Why has this problem been allowed to escelate so far? Yes, Karnataka does have a reservoir for its need during lean months. Why is it expected to store water for the other state? Should the other state not be responsible enough and start building its own reservoir, rather than depending on Karnataka?

I feel this should not be treated as an issue between two states, but should be treated at a National Level, and should be handled at a war-footing pace.

Non-jumping of a Signal
Today while driving from JC Road, towards Hudson Memorial Church, a lorry ahead of me was moving very very slowly, at a snail's pace. It was ahead of me, and towards the right. I did try slowly moving into the left lane to avoid trailing the slow-moving bulky vehicle, laden with loosely-placed furniture items.

This bulky item covered the visibility of trafic signal, and i moved ahead in the impression of overtaking it. The light had turned red, and the cops fined me :-((.

Can we not make it mandatory for these bulky and other slow moving vehicles like auto rikshaws to keep left on all roads? I hope someone seriously considers doing so.

Indifferent Cop
Last evening while driving back home, I had to cross the Richmond Road junction below the flyover. The turn from Richmond Road is not a free left turn, and we do have the red signal glowing. For a change, if I try to obey that signal, the auto rikshaw drivers, and other car owners start honking as an indication to go on without caring about the signal. the two-wheelers did not even bother honking, as they could pass along the sides.

the cop standing there gave me a look as if I was just out of a mental assylum. Even before the signal turns green, the cop asked me to go. I immediately went! Thanks to the cop for saving a couple of seconds of my time!

Once in a while, you just feel like leaving your car behind and avoiding driving. That is precisely what I indulged into last evening.

Firstly, I could observe someone else doing the gruelling job of maneuvering through traffic.

The Valentine's Day has come and gone. It has left a few hard facts on my mind. Well, the western community can create great marketting gimmics; nothing can prove it better than the Valentine's Day.

While passing by the Brigade Road on 14th evening, we came across a long queue of oulandishly dressed girls and guys. The were all waiting to celebrate Valentine's Day, and gain entry into 'Urban Edge', a pub on the Brigade Road extension.

It makes me ponder, "Is that how one celebrates love?"

The moment vehicles are on the flyover, people seem confused. They appear to go in all possible directions, as if not knowing their destinations.

It is so chaotic, but putting a divider there cannot solve the situation. It really makes me wonder asto what could be the solution to this problem.

The festive season is round the corner. we just had Eid yesterday. Christmas is round the corner, and New year follows. The guys and the gals are sure to paint the town red!
mbg 19:15

The New BEL Road seems an utter chaos. 'really makes me wonder, how people manage using the route. I really wish the authorities do someting about it.

No doubt, they have placed a hospital on the same road. This is called managing casualties efficiently.

It took me over 45 minutes to reach Kormanagala from Jayanagar today. Every single signal was red. The signals near Bannerghatta cross took three turns for letting me pass. The BTM took 2 signals, 2 near Raheja arcade. This was bad, and a lot of waiting time.

We do have set upper speed limits. That's right. How about setting lower speed limits too? This morning, at the Jayanagar 4th Main Road, I had to stay under 30, as there was an empty lorry slowly gliding along the road. The left lane was totally unusable due to the stopping auto-rikshas, slow moving cycles, and two wheelers, plus patches of dug up road.

If we cannot be promised a minimum speed, why tie us down with upper limits?

10 Dec 2001

Yes, there is a big accident racket in town. In fact, I myself have been a victim to the same yesterday.

I was driving on the ring road from Jayanagar towards Hosur Road. All of a sudden I see an old man running in the middle of the road. The distance was very short, but my brakes did an excellent job. The car came to a screeching halt, a few inches before the old man. The old man falls on the road with a 220 degree turn, faking to be hit by the car. He did have a small scar probably of the tar road he had fallen on. He kept pressing it to ooze blood of it, but that effort did not yield much.

As expected the mob comes around, and take the side of the old man. The ask me to shell out Rs.500/- to the man as a compensation. The mob and the old man refuse going to the police station, refuse medical help... All that they are keen on is getting the moolah off a car owner.

Mr. Commissioner! Can we mere mortals, have a solution to this road-side nuisance?

The Bannerghatta road seems to be like the surface of Mars (I presume), Kalasipalyam Area seems to be like the Moon...I guess with these authorities, we have the entire solar system in our city. Do we need to go any farther for the experience?

07 Nov 2001

Last evening, while travelling from Shantinagar to Jayanagar, we faced major problems with the traffic.

Firstly, the BTS busses were moving in their own sweet way, occupying all the lanes of Double Road, and overtaking other busses before stopping at the bus-stops. The other bus again overtakes the first bus creating havoc on the road. I hope Mr Jairaj takes care of this aspect.

Secondly, the right turn permitted into HOPCOMS from the main road causes another bottle-neck. I hope this turn is closed atleast during the Peak traffic hours. I would suggest a divider on this main road to avoid haphazard trafic.

The biggest of all was the chaos at the junction of the roads leading to Dairy Circle and Ashoka Pillar. What a chaos!! The cop standing on the trafic island was contributing more to it than reducing it.
We could have trafic lights here probably, as on the junction near Palace Grounds at Sadashivnagar. 'donno if that would help...

Lots of cops in action on the Nanda Talkies road this morning. Looks like the cops now mean real business. Law and Order in Trafic seems to be a priority with the current Police Chief.

We just hope that Bangalore can do away with the 'Most Chaotic Trafic' title.

The Lalbagh Road, is one of the most prominant roads in Bangalore. Not only does it lead visitors to the famous Lalbagh Gardens, but is one of the two links to South Bangalore. The condition of this road is so bad. In fact 60-70% of the surface is covered by dirty mounds or potholes. The remaining smooth surface is dominated by cyclists, bullock carts, and auto rikshaws. Even the BTS busses seem to bully the passing vehicles in the remaining areas.

Commuters have had it, if the Urvashi Cinema hall happens to finish a show around that time.

I hope the concerned authorities turn their eyes this way too. Moreover, as the BCC elections are approaching.

Some of the best tasting tomatoes are to be found in the local village markets. There is a real tomato taste about them. They taste so much better than the tomatoes to be found in the supermarkets. Tomatoes have been designed and bred to be large, firm, good in color, to keep well in storage and to have a good weight. The designs have been successful – but the taste has suffered. Tomatoes must look good in the supermarkets and must continue to look good. Taste is a lesser consideration – especially as everyone will soon have forgotten what tomatoes must taste like.

In Persuit of Bread
Bread...yes bread seemed to be a rare commodity in Sout Bangalore today. I was in search of three loafs of Family sized un-sweetened bread. Not even one available in Jayanagar, Banshankari, JP Nagar, BTM Layout. The shopkeepers blamed it on the bakers taking long break for the festival.

Moral of the story : You do not get bread after the festival.

Hosur Road Blues
This morning I had to go to the Electronic City, with some work. The going journey was nice and smooth (around 7 AM). The return journey (around 8:30 AM) was a bad experience. It was filled by cyclists, bullock carts, tempos and other such vehicles. One of the lanes was rendered almost useless due to these slow-moving vehicles, and the Public Transport busses were stopping to block the remaining lane. One literally was at the mercy of the lorry driver ahead.

Is this the fate of the Electronic City? Do the commuters have to face this inconvenience? I hope our IT savvy CM wakes up to this reality, and comes out with a solution to this problem soon.

A friend mailed this to me out of the blue - "I got up in the middle of the night sweating!! I was dreaming about the 'benne masala dosas' of Central Tiffin Room (Malleshwaram)."

Wow!! A must try, especially for the dosa-lovers. This restaurant is more popularly, rather unpopularly known as the 'Chalera (cholera) Hotel'. The looks of this place are not too appealing, but the dosas are yum!!!

Good Morning Bangalore
Another dry day, with no traces of rains appearing, The roads seem dry, all the puddles have dried up. Yes, thats one relief, when there are no rains!

We have started dreading this beautiful weather because of our inefficient administrative authorities.

Within half an hour of initiation of rains, the roads are filled with puddles (the depth of these cant even be guaged unless you visit them), drains start flowing faster than the KRS dam, etc. Is someone noticing all this?

Non-Violent Protest

The Islamic Leaders in Uttar Pradesh have suggested that people boycott Coke, Pepsi and other American products to oppose the American move. That's a nice, healthy and peaceful way to protest. It is a better choice than any non-violent dharna / morcha, in turn creating havoc and causing loss of life and property.

These soft stances also do have an effect. Look back at history!!!

At last some relief from rains!

No, I am not against them; in fact love them. It feels good to see the Sun once in a while. Today was one of those days. Within a day airconditioners have stared full-blast.

At this rate, the idea of Summer haunts me!!! Plus the Government with their power cuts, water shortages...

Was just sitting around the office and laid my hands or 2 - 3 day old news paper. My god!! What did I read???? Osama Bin Laden claims the tension in Kashmir a war by Hindus against Muslims in India. How could he make such drastic remarks. I guess his brains have rusted living in the caves and all he can think of is Jihad. Let me inform him that them are more Muslims in India than in Pakistan and Afghanistan put together. And most of them live peacefully with their hindu counterparts, excepting a few who are powered by politics or mafias. But that holds good for every other religion too. I guess Osama is doing more bad to Islam than good. Its time Muslims asked him to leave them alone and let his MF group rest in peace.

Cops (In)Action
Last week, my colleagues and I were off for lunch to SLV Cafe on Vani Vilasa Road, Basavanagudi. Turning around the corner from Gandhibazaar Main Road, the right indicator was put on immediately. An old man, probably in his 60s on a scooter, comes and rams the car from behind...The impact was at a high-speed, and he got thrown off the scooter. Parking our vehicle, we go to his aid, only to listen to filthy words from him.

Not wanting to complicate the matters, we drove to the Basavanagudi Police Station. 'seemed like a haunted house, and no one there to make a not of the complaint. After a lot of pressure, one drowsy cop listened to the incident, and tells us that he cannot file an FIR, and called this as a very small issue.

The old man met us again on the road and started abusing us with filthy language. How do we keep these problems at bay? Even the cops do not seem to support.

WATER IS PRECIOUS, We all know that. But at any given time on the roads of Bangalore dozens of broken BWSSB water pipes send out water gushing into the streets like it were an auxiliary river, and sometimes it’s shot into the air like a fresh water spring. One such Cauvery auxiliary runs on the Lalbagh road, day in and day out. One might say, “look at all the drinking water being wasted” luckily that’s not the case here, since the water runs through the auto rickshaw stand, most of the auto drivers take this opportunity to bathe their auto rickshaws while they are waiting for the passengers. On the one hand its good to know that at least on Lalbagh road leaking water is being put to good use, but on the other hand my heart goes out to all the women in D.J halli who queue around a lonely corporation tap which only runs for 3 hours a day.

These days there are rising number of cases of Computer Related Injuries (CRI). The experts suggest that atleast 75% of Bangalore's population is suffering from this, even at ages as low as 7 years.

I have heard everyone crib about the expensive lifestyle at Bangalore...the restaurants being expensive and all that.

This evening, the lovely weather of Bangalore made me crave for some nice 'bajjis'. We went out and loitered for 35 minutes in search of some in Jayanagar.

We found no 'bajjis', but hordes of 'manjuris' (a South Indian version of the famous Chinese delicacy 'Vegetable Manchurian').

Don't we get the typical Bangalorean delicacy any more? Are we destined only to get a foreign imitation, rather than the genuine local delicacy?

Nothing better than a great drive to unwind the grind of the day...now we do have a few great roads...especially the stretch on Sarjapur Road (between hosur road and the outer ring road) and the outer ring road, till it touches the Madras Road.

The roads are just good. Another observation I made was that the trucks readily give you an overtake without the need to honk. The broad roads do make it convenient for them to give space without hindering their speeds.

The flip-side here is that this road has already started developing pot-holes. Last night, I must be at the speed of 95-100 Kmph and suddenly observed big boulders kept in the middle of the road. I had no other option, but to apply sudden brakes. If someone had not noticed this, it could have caused considerable damage.

I hope the concerned authorities really look into this and try creating GOOD ROADS in the true sense!
mbg 13:07

We now have another coffee bar to go to. The new Barista opened a couple of days back next to 180 Proof on St. Marks rd. Looks very spacious and well done. The splendor, if I may call it includes a painting by mural artist Ajay Gulati. Looks fab.

A few more of these, Please...
A few roads in Bangalore like the Kasturba road (adjoining the cubbon park) and the roads surrounding Lalbagh Botanical Gardens (especially near the south gate), demonstrate Bangalore worthy of the title "Garden City".

It is a pleasure moving on these roads, as the branches of the huge trees create excellent patterns below.

Secondly, this keeps the scorching heat of the sun at bay in summers, and one enjoys the cool breeze.

Let's have some more such roads to keep up the tradition of the Garden City...
mbg 11:14

Last evening, I was at the Kantheervaa Stadium for some exhibition. Guess what? the Stadium built for sports has now become a Circle, with traffic on both the sides becoming a one way.
This brings a variety of thoughts to my mind:
  1. Should a sports stadium not have good fresh air around it? Ultimately, a part of the Cubbon Park is being exploited comercially.

  2. The entire venue looked like a mela was going on there. Whay are these premises being let out to such commercial ventures? Should the facilities not be kept for sports practices rather?

Anyways, I guess we have a sound Government and Bureaucracy in place capable of passing beneficiary resolutions.

I am sure lots of people would have noticed this. Not even a single decent multi-brand sports shop where we can choose from a decent range of all, I mean all shoes like Nike, Reebok, Adidas, etc. I had to go to each and every brand's store to buy a decent pair of running shoes. What a shame??? I hope some smart business man of Bangalore is reading this ;-)

Motherly affection in Peak Traffic

Today, while driving down the busy GandhiBazaar main road, we find a heavy jam. As we near the spot, there's something that touches one's heart. A cow standing right in the middle of one of the lanes, and a calf suckling it. Okay, I agree the cows too need to spend time with the kids...but, not right in the middle of the road.

I hope the owners of these animals are more cautious about them and take care to avoid blocking traffic.

I guess the Municipal Corporation should try taking away stray cattle and returning it on payment of some fine. That should help in reducing the infinite jay-walking animal menace on the busy roads, keeping rising tempers and loud horns at bay.

Gosh!! The rains in the city today were really amazing, just too much. People suffered due to the poor infrastructure and traffic indicipline. Good rains are something to enjoy, but they become nightmare due to infrastructure. CM Krishna, any improvements here would really be appreciated. May be the money collected for the Ungderground rail system could be diverted here as that project has been shelved anyways.

The airport authorities have decided to levy an additional charge of Rs.200 on the passengers. Why, this new charge? This is being done under the pretecxt of collections for the new Devanhalli Airport.

The rains at Bangalore have made the temperature come down for sure. But, the magnitude has even created the potholes as usual.

Is someone listening to these complains, or are they falling on deaf ears? Year after year, rains ruin the roads, and year after year the bureaucracy takes temporary measures.

Is someone going to do something concrete about this?
